Mental Illness: Removing the Stigma

Let’s look at the facts. According to The National Institute of Mental Illness (2012), an estimated 43.7 million adults in the U.S. are suffering from a mental illness of some form. That is 18.6% of our entire population. Now, imagine if every person with mental illness actually stepped forward for help. The real statistics would be outrageous.

How can we remove the stigma surrounding mental illness? The answer is education. Please educate your patients and their families on mental health awareness. To my fellow nurses: remove the stigma, one patient at a time.
